Islamabad, 15 May, 2025: Google has officially introduced Android 16, and it’s shaping up to be one of the platform’s most well-rounded updates yet.

Announced just ahead of Google I/O 2025, the latest version blends improved performance, modern design changes, and a deeper role for artificial intelligence throughout the system.

Material 3 Expressive Design

Android 16 comes with a new design language called Material 3 Expressive, which automatically adjusts the system’s appearance based on the user’s wallpaper.

Colors, fonts, and icons now feel more dynamic, and transitions between different states are smoother. Subtle improvements, like a slimmer volume slider and a more refined power menu, make everyday use feel more polished.

Live Activities on the Lock Screen

Deriving a useful idea from other platforms, Android 16 now allows users to keep track of ongoing tasks right from the lock screen.

Whether it’s a food delivery, a countdown timer, or directions, these Live Activities stay visible even when the phone is locked, making multitasking more seamless.

A Smarter, More Flexible Quick Settings Panel

The Quick Settings area has been completely redesigned. Instead of multiple swipes, users can now access all key controls in one full-screen layout.

Tiles can be rearranged and resized, and the system can suggest certain toggles based on time or location like automatically surfacing the “Do Not Disturb” option at night.

Built-in Scam Protection and Privacy Upgrades

Android 16 takes user protection seriously. A new call screening tool, powered by on-device AI, helps flag suspicious calls before they ring.

There are also new safeguards to stop apps from recording your screen or audio without permission. The Advanced Protection Suite offers even more options for users with higher security needs.

Gemini AI Integration Across the System

Google’s Gemini AI is more present than ever, helping users draft messages, summarize text, and suggest apps, all directly within the system.

Some of these features can even run without an internet connection, thanks to on-device processing for newer phones.

Release Timeline

Android 16 is now available through the Developer Preview and Beta programs for Pixel devices.

A full public release is expected in June 2025, with Samsung, OnePlus, and other manufacturers rolling it out later in the summer.
