George Foreman, the two-time heavyweight boxing champion known for his fearsome power and unforgettable career, passed away on March 21, 2025, at the age of 76. His family confirmed the news with a heartfelt Instagram post, saying he “peacefully departed” surrounded by loved ones. Foreman’s legacy extends beyond the boxing ring to his later years as a successful businessman, motivational figure, and cultural icon.

The Early Years: A Rise from Poverty

Born on January 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas, Foreman’s early life was marked by hardship. His family soon moved to Houston, where he grew up with six siblings under the care of a single mother. Living in poverty in the segregated South, Foreman dropped out of junior high school and turned to street life, using his size and strength for street robberies. However, a life-changing intervention came through the Job Corps, part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society” program, which helped Foreman channel his rage into boxing.

At 16, Foreman moved out of Texas to train in the boxing program, a turning point that redirected his life. His success in the sport quickly became apparent. By age 19, he won a gold medal in the heavyweight boxing division at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, making a name for himself on the international stage.

Champion of the Ring: Foreman’s Boxing Legacy

After turning professional, Foreman went on an unprecedented winning streak, claiming 37 straight victories. His rise culminated in a shot at the heavyweight championship against Joe Frazier in 1973. Foreman won the match with a dominant second-round technical knockout, taking the title.

His reign was cemented when he faced Muhammad Ali in 1974 at the infamous “Rumble in the Jungle” in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Ali, a heavy underdog after being stripped of his title, used his famous “rope-a-dope” strategy to tire Foreman and knock him out in the eighth round, in what became one of boxing’s most iconic matches. Foreman described the loss as devastating, stating, “I was one punching machine and that was the first time I delivered everything I had and nothing worked.”

After the loss, Foreman took a break from the sport. He spent the following years away from the ring, and in 1977, he retired to become an ordained minister, dedicating himself to the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Unlikely Comeback

A decade later, Foreman made an unexpected return to boxing at the age of 38, weighing 315 pounds (143 kg). His return was initially motivated by a desire to raise money for a youth center he had established in Texas. But to everyone’s surprise, Foreman proved that he still had the heart and skill to succeed in the ring. He won 24 consecutive matches, gradually losing weight and regaining some of his former athleticism.

In 1991, Foreman faced Evander Holyfield in a highly anticipated bout but lost by a unanimous decision. However, in 1994, at the age of 45, Foreman stunned the world when he knocked out undefeated Michael Moorer in the 10th round to reclaim the heavyweight title, becoming the oldest-ever heavyweight champion.

Foreman’s career ended in 1997 with a professional record of 76 wins and 5 losses. His knockout victory over Moorer remains one of the most incredible moments in boxing history.

Life Beyond Boxing: Foreman’s Business Success

In the years following his retirement from boxing, Foreman found immense success in the business world, most famously with the George Foreman Grill. In the late 1990s, he became the face of an electric cooking grill produced by Salton Inc. The product became a massive hit, and in 1999, Foreman and his partners earned $137.5 million from the deal.

Foreman’s entrepreneurial spirit extended beyond the grill. He became known for his genuine enthusiasm for the products he endorsed, saying in his autobiography, By George, “What I do is fall in love with every product I sell. That’s what sells. Just like with preaching.”

A Family Man

Foreman was married five times. His longest marriage was to Mary Joan Martelly, whom he wed in 1985. They remained together until his passing. He had five sons, all named George, as well as five biological daughters and two adopted daughters.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Foreman’s life story was one of resilience, reinvention, and determination. From his difficult childhood in the segregated South to his ascent as a boxing legend and later, a business mogul, Foreman’s journey continues to inspire many. Houston Mayor John Whitmire praised Foreman’s legacy, stating, “George’s journey from the streets of Fifth Ward to boxing and business success was an inspiration.” Whitmire added, “He never forgot where he came from. Houston will forever be proud to call George Foreman one of our own.”

As one of boxing’s greatest champions and a trailblazer in business, George Foreman’s impact will live on. His remarkable journey from adversity to triumph will continue to inspire future generations.
