A university field trip ended in catastrophe on Saturday after a bus carrying students and faculty from Humboldt University crashed in the mountainous western region of Colombia, leaving at least 10 people dead and 11 others injured.
The fatal accident occurred near the Helicoil Bridge in the department of Quindio, a region known for its winding roads and scenic highland terrain. Preliminary reports suggest the driver lost control of the vehicle, which was carrying a total of 26 passengers, en route from Tolima to Quindio.

The Colombian National Police reported that the crash happened when the bus veered into a roadside barrier, causing several passengers to be thrown from the vehicle and fall into a deep ravine.
“Several passengers were ejected and fell into the abyss,” said Police Commander Luis Fernando Atuesta, who is overseeing the investigation. He noted that an inquiry is ongoing to determine whether mechanical failure, human error, or poor road conditions led to the accident.
Emergency responders were dispatched swiftly to the remote area, and local rescue teams worked through the afternoon to recover bodies and transport the injured to nearby hospitals. The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially released.

The bus was carrying 22 students, two professors, and one communications officer from Humboldt University, based in the city of Armenia, the capital of Quindio.
In a somber video statement, University Director Diego Fernando Jaramillo Lopez confirmed the tragedy and announced two days of mourning in memory of those who lost their lives.
“We deeply regret the painful loss of several of our colleagues, students, professors, and administrators,” Jaramillo said. “The entire academic community is in shock and mourning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims.”
Classes at the university have been suspended, and grief counseling services are being offered to students and staff affected by the incident.
