China launched a massive military exercise on Tuesday, surrounding Taiwan with its army, navy, air force, and rocket forces. In addition to the warships, China also mobilized 71 aircraft and four coast guard vessels. This marks the highest number of Chinese warships reported around Taiwan since May 2024, when 27 vessels were deployed in similar drills.
The increased presence of Chinese military assets is part of a broader strategy by Beijing to intensify pressure on Taiwan, which has drawn strong condemnation from Taipei. China has steadily increased its military presence around Taiwan in recent years, deploying fighter jets and naval vessels to the region, actions that have raised alarms within the Taiwanese government.

The military drills come at a time of heightened political tension. Taiwan’s newly elected president, Lai Ching-te, took office in May 2024, a move that has exacerbated tensions with Beijing. Beijing’s stated objective for the exercises was to send a “stern warning and forceful deterrence” to separatist forces in Taiwan. The drills included a series of military maneuvers designed to simulate various combat scenarios, including “sea-air combat-readiness patrols, joint seizure of comprehensive superiority, assault on maritime and ground targets, and blockade on key areas and sea lanes.” According to Senior Colonel Shi Yi, a spokesman for China’s Eastern Theater Command, the operations involved “multi-directional precision strikes” aimed at encircling Taiwan from multiple directions.
China’s Coast Guard Conducts Patrols
In addition to the military exercises, China’s coast guard also conducted what it called “law enforcement patrols” around Taiwan. These patrols are part of China’s broader strategy to assert control over the waters surrounding Taiwan, a move that is seen as further escalating the situation. The presence of Chinese coast guard vessels, alongside the military exercises, has sparked concern over the potential for military confrontations in the Taiwan Strait.

Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, issued a stern warning, saying that “pursuing ‘Taiwan independence’ means pushing the people of Taiwan into a dangerous situation of war.” This rhetoric highlights China’s long-standing opposition to any form of Taiwanese independence, which Beijing views as a red line. The Chinese government has consistently stated that it will use any means necessary, including military force, to prevent Taiwan from declaring independence.
Taiwan, however, maintains that it is a sovereign state, with its own government, military, and democratic institutions. The island’s leadership has reiterated its commitment to defending its autonomy, despite the mounting pressure from Beijing.
