 Deadly Earthquake Strikes Border Region

A powerful earthquake of 6.1 magnitude struck the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region on Friday night, April 3, 2026, causing widespread panic and claiming at least eight lives in the Afghan capital .

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake occurred at 9:13 p.m. PST at a depth of approximately 190 kilometers, with its epicenter located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan . The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 for the same event .

Casualties and Damage in Afghanistan

At least eight people were killed and a child injured when a house collapsed on the outskirts of Kabul, according to Hafizullah Basharat, a spokesman for the Kabul governor . All victims were members of the same family.

Kabul is located approximately 290 kilometers (180 miles) southwest of the epicenter . The remote mountainous areas closer to the epicenter have not yet reported damage, though communication with these regions can take hours.

Afghanistan’s Health Ministry spokesman Sharafat Zaman confirmed that Kabul and provincial health authorities have been placed on high alert .

🇵🇰 Tremors Shake Major Pakistani Cities

The earthquake sent powerful tremors across a wide swath of Pakistan, causing residents to evacuate buildings in panic .

Areas where tremors were felt include:

  • Islamabad and Rawalpindi (twin cities)
  • Peshawar, Chitral, Swat and Shangla in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
  • Lahore, Mianwali, Jhang, Faisalabad, Sargodha and the Potohar region in Punjab
  • Parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan

Following the tremors, Islamabad Police Inspector General Ali Nasir Rizvi directed all officers to assess the situation in their respective areas and submit immediate reports .

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmed Faizi confirmed that while tremors were widely felt, no calls regarding damage to life or property had been received in the province . Similarly, Punjab’s Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported no loss of life or property across the province, though inspections of government and public buildings are underway .

📊Regional Context: Seismically Active Zone

The Hindu Kush region is part of the Alpide belt, one of the most seismically active zones on Earth. The region sits at the collision point of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, generating frequent, often powerful earthquakes.

Friday’s quake occurred at an unusually deep focal depth of approximately 190 kilometers, which explains why the shaking was felt across such a vast area—from Kabul to Lahore, a distance exceeding 450 kilometers . Deep earthquakes typically have larger felt areas than shallow quakes of similar magnitude.

The region has suffered devastating earthquakes in recent memory :

  • August 2025: A 6.0-magnitude earthquake in Kunar province, eastern Afghanistan, killed more than 2,200 people and leveled remote mountain villages
  • November 2025: A 6.3-magnitude earthquake in Samangan province killed at least 27 people and injured over 950, damaging historical sites including the famed Blue Mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif
  • October 2023: A 6.3-magnitude quake followed by strong aftershocks in western Afghanistan killed thousands of people

Response and Preparedness

Afghanistan often faces significant challenges in responding to natural disasters due to its mountainous terrain, limited infrastructure, and economic constraints. Many homes in rural areas are constructed from mud bricks and wood, with poor building standards that increase vulnerability to collapse .

In Pakistan, the PDMA has activated its emergency operation centers 24/7 and advised the public to report any earthquake-related damages via the PDMA helpline at 1129 .

The German Research Centre for Geosciences reported a separate magnitude 5.5 earthquake near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border earlier Friday, prior to the main quake . No significant aftershocks have been reported following the main event.
