In a rare and life-changing surgery, doctors in Delhi successfully removed a parasitic twin from a 17-year-old boy. The parasitic twin, which had developed fully formed limbs, buttocks, and a pelvis, was attached to the teenager’s abdomen and sustained by a chest artery. The surgery, conducted at Aiims Hospital, took two hours and was particularly challenging due to the rarity of the condition and the patient’s young age.
What is a Parasitic Twin?
A parasitic twin is a rare condition where one twin fails to fully develop and becomes dependent on the other twin for survival. It is an extremely rare phenomenon, occurring in less than one in 100,000 births. In this case, the parasitic twin had two fully formed legs, buttocks, and external genitalia, weighing nearly 15kg. Remarkably, the parasitic limbs could experience sensations like pain, touch, and changes in temperature.
The Challenging Surgery
Dr. Asuri Krishna, who led the surgery, described the operation as particularly difficult because of the boy’s age and the rarity of parasitic twin cases. Only 40-50 such cases have been documented worldwide. With limited medical literature to guide them, the doctors had to rely on their knowledge, intuition, and skill.
The surgeons first used scans to determine how interconnected the parasitic twin was to the host twin. They found that the parasitic twin was attached to the teen’s breastbone and was supplied with blood from a vessel in the chest. However, there were no significant connections with the boy’s vital organs like the liver or kidneys.
The Surgery Process
The surgery was performed in two stages. First, the parasitic twin was carefully removed, followed by the extraction of a cystic mass found in the teenager’s abdomen. The procedure required a team of doctors, including radiologists, anesthetists, and plastic surgeons. The doctors had to separate a mesh of shared blood vessels, nerves, and tissues without damaging any of the host’s organs or tissues.

During the surgery, the teen’s blood pressure dropped dangerously as 30-40% of his blood was flowing to the parasitic twin. However, the doctors were well-prepared for this complication and quickly stabilized him. The operation lasted two and a half hours, and the boy was discharged just four days later, healthy and without complications.
Impact on the Teen’s Mental Health and Life
The teenager, from Unnao in Uttar Pradesh, had faced considerable challenges due to his condition. His unusual appearance made him the subject of gossip and ridicule in his community, which took a toll on his mental health. He felt isolated and lonely, unable to engage in physical activities or even attend school. He had dropped out of school in the eighth grade because of the stigma he faced.
Now, after the surgery, the teenager expressed his excitement about his new life. He said he felt like a new world had opened up to him, and he hoped to continue his studies and eventually get a job. He is now looking forward to living an active and fulfilling life, free from the burden of his condition.
A New Beginning
Thanks to the groundbreaking surgery, the 17-year-old now has the chance to live a normal life without the limitations he previously faced. The successful removal of the parasitic twin marks a significant medical achievement, offering hope for others who may be affected by similar rare conditions. With a bright future ahead, the teenager is eager to make the most of this new chapter in his life.
