In the words of Louise, it was the “mother of all surgeries.” To treat the disease, doctors removed eight of her organs, including her spleen, gallbladder, appendix, and part of her liver and small bowel. The surgery also involved a full hysterectomy, where Louise lost her ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus. Additionally, the procedure required doctors to scrape her pelvis and diaphragm and administer heated chemotherapy directly into her abdomen.

She had to rebuild strength in her core, which was severely weakened due to the extensive surgery. “This time last year I wasn’t even able to walk. So to be standing here now and being back in the environment I love, doing the job that I love, it’s something that I never thought that I’d be able to do again physically,” Louise said, reflecting on her incredible recovery.
Despite the overwhelming physical and emotional challenges she faced, Louise found strength in her passion for aviation and her deep connection to her work at Gatwick. “I had no core strength, so I had to rebuild all my muscle in my tummy area. It feels amazing to be back in my home,” she added.
