This search followed an Australian-led effort, which, after three years, was suspended in January 2017. The search will continue to follow the “no find, no fee” agreement, with the Malaysian government only paying Ocean Infinity if they successfully locate the aircraft. Previous estimates suggested that the government would pay the company up to $70 million if they find the plane.
The Malaysian Transport Minister also noted that Ocean Infinity had convinced officials that this new search area was more credible than previous locations. “They have combined all the data from previous efforts and feel confident this is the best area to focus on,” he said.
