Google has unveiled plans to invest $15 billion over the next five years to establish an artificial intelligence data centre in India’s southern state of Andhra Pradesh, representing the technology giant’s most substantial investment in the world’s most populous nation.
The new facility, located in the port city of Visakhapatnam, will serve as Google’s largest AI hub outside the United States. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian announced the initiative during a Tuesday event, signaling the company’s confidence in India’s growing technology infrastructure market.
Gigawatt-Scale Computing Capacity
The planned facility will feature 1-gigawatt capacity, positioning it among the most powerful data centres globally. The infrastructure investment reflects surging demand for specialized data centres capable of linking thousands of chips in clusters to support AI applications requiring enormous computing power.
The development will establish a new international subsea cable gateway alongside cutting-edge computing infrastructure designed to deliver gigawatt-scale processing capabilities for global service deployment.
Strategic Market Positioning
Google parent company Alphabet views India as a crucial growth market where YouTube commands the largest user base and Android devices dominate smartphone adoption. The substantial capital commitment underscores India’s strategic importance as multinational technology companies expand cloud and AI infrastructure across the region.
State officials initially estimated the project would generate approximately 188,000 employment opportunities, though Google has not confirmed final job creation figures.
Global Data Centre Expansion
Google has allocated approximately $85 billion this year toward data centre capacity expansion, reflecting industry-wide investments in AI infrastructure as companies compete to develop and deploy large language models and advanced computing services.
The Visakhapatnam facility represents a cornerstone of Google’s international expansion strategy, positioning the company to serve Asia-Pacific markets with enhanced computing resources while capitalizing on India’s skilled workforce and favorable business environment.
