In a decisive move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially agreed to not only participate in the Asia Cup 2025 but also go ahead with the much-anticipated clash against Pakistan, set for September 14 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

No Room for Withdrawal, Says BCCI Source

During a recent Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting in Dhaka, BCCI representatives reportedly gave the green light to the tournament schedule, effectively ending speculation of a potential boycott.

“The BCCI cannot withdraw from the tournament or the match now. The decision was agreed upon after the ACC meeting,” said a senior BCCI official.

As India is the official host of the tournament, officials stated that altering or refusing to play any scheduled fixture — particularly the marquee clash with Pakistan — is no longer a viable option.

Backlash from Media & Former Cricketers

Despite the formal decision, Indian media and several ex-cricketers have slammed the BCCI and government for not taking a stronger stance amid ongoing political tensions with Pakistan.

Echoing past calls for a boycott during the World Champions League, voices from media outlets and former players argue that India should not engage in any sporting events with Pakistan under current circumstances.

Asia Cup 2025: Key Dates and Structure

The Asia Cup 2025 will feature eight teams and follow the T20 format as a preparatory tournament for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

Here are the key group-stage fixtures:

  • Opening Match: Afghanistan vs Hong Kong – September 9
  • India vs Pakistan: September 14
  • Pakistan’s First Match: vs Oman – September 12
  • Pakistan vs UAE: September 17

Depending on outcomes, India and Pakistan could meet again in the Super Four stage and potentially in the final, allowing for up to three clashes in one tournament.

Cricket Diplomacy Over Politics

While calls for a boycott persist, BCCI’s silent but firm confirmation signals a preference for cricketing diplomacy over political confrontation — at least for now.

The decision will likely intensify debate, but it ensures that one of the most-watched rivalries in sports will return to the global stage once again in 2025.
