NEW DELHI: The Indian Supreme Court stated that Article 370, which granted special status to Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), was initially a temporary provision.

In August 2019, the government led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi unilaterally revoked the special status of the occupied valley and deployed tens of thousands of troops to deter protests against this illegal action.

Following this, a set of petitions contested the abrogation of Article 370 from the Constitution.

A five-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, deliberated on the matter for 16 days and reserved its verdict on September 5.

Today, the Indian CJI-led bench announced its decision, asserting that the occupied territory had become an integral part of India, as evident from Article 1 and 370 of the constitution.

Additionally, the court upheld the Indian government’s choice to revoke the semi-autonomous status of the disputed region, stating that the IIOJK “does not possess internal sovereignty.”
