Middle East tensions escalated dramatically on May 4 as Iranian forces launched a multi-pronged attack on US warships, commercial vessels, and the United Arab Emirates in response to Washington’s new “Project Freedom” initiative to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz .
Strikes on US and commercial vessels. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired cruise missiles, rockets, and drones near US warships in the Gulf of Oman after the vessels ignored radio warnings . Iranian media claimed two missiles struck a US Navy ship near Jask island, forcing it to retreat — a claim US Central Command categorically denied, stating “No US Navy ships have been struck” . The US military reported sinking six Iranian small boats attempting to interfere with commercial shipping .
UAE under direct attack. The UAE came under direct attack for the first time since the April ceasefire, intercepting three of four cruise missiles launched from Iran . A fourth missile fell into the sea. Additionally, a drone attack struck the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone, injuring three people and causing a fire . The UAE condemned Iran’s “maritime piracy” targeting an Adnoc oil tanker transiting the strait .
Corresponding military action. The US Navy reported two US-flagged merchant vessels successfully transited the strait as part of “Project Freedom” — a mission involving 15,000 service members, guided-missile destroyers, and over 100 aircraft . Iran warned that any foreign military force approaching the strait “will be attacked,” declaring the waterway “will not return to its pre-war status” . The attacks risk collapsing the fragile Pakistan-brokered ceasefire .
