In Islamabad, a trial court sanctioned the bail of vlogger Asad Toor on Saturday, in connection to allegations of initiating an online movement critical of the judiciary, leading to an order for his release.
The hearing for Toor’s application for bail following his arrest was conducted by Special Judge Central Humayun Dilawar. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had apprehended Toor under accusations of inciting a digital campaign against the judiciary and other state entities.
Advocates Imaan Mazari-Hazir and Hadi Ali Chatha represented Toor in court. Additionally, the investigation officer and FIA prosecutor Ashfaq Hussain Shah attended the hearing, equipped with the necessary case documentation.
At the beginning of the proceedings, Advocate Chatha referenced a Supreme Court statement suggesting that journalists should not face charges for participating in social media campaigns criticizing superior judiciary members. Upon inquiry by Judge Dilawar regarding the veracity of the Supreme Court’s remark, the FIA’s representative confirmed its accuracy.
The court concluded to grant Toor bail, requiring surety bonds of Rs.5,000. FIA Special Prosecutor Syed Ashfaq Hussain Shah did not contest the bail request.
Previously, on February 23, Toor was detained by the FIA for eight hours after he reported to the JIT for an investigation, despite not receiving a formal notice as mandated by proper procedures, as stated by his lawyer, Imaan Mazari.
The formal complaint against Toor alleges that he engaged in a derogatory campaign against the judiciary on social media platforms, including X and YouTube, promoting anti-state sentiments. Consequently, he faces charges under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) of 2016.
