Islamabad, 23 May 2025: Underpass construction has taken a significant leap forward in the capital region, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the newly developed Jinnah Square Murree Road Underpass on Friday.
The project, completed in just 35 days, was described by the premier as a strategic move to improve traffic flow toward the hill station of Murree and benefit national connectivity.
Spanning 479 meters with a three-lane setup, the underpass is a key component of a larger signal-free corridor stretching from Islamabad Airport to Murree. Officials noted that the aim is to minimize travel delays and congestion on one of the busiest routes in the region.
The prime minister acknowledged the rapid delivery of the project and commended Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa, IG Islamabad Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, and their respective teams for their coordinated efforts.
During the ceremony, Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that the 9-kilometer uninterrupted travel route will ease movement not only for residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad but also for visitors from other parts of the country.
The underpass is expected to play a vital role in managing seasonal traffic to Murree, especially during holiday periods.
The premier humorously encouraged the development teams to maintain — or even increase — their pace of work, suggesting that future projects might be completed in a single day if such momentum continues.
The inauguration event was attended by various cabinet members, state officials, and local parliamentarians, who collectively praised the infrastructure push aimed at urban efficiency.
Underpass initiatives like this, according to government sources, reflect broader efforts to streamline metropolitan transport and support tourism.
With increased emphasis on speed, quality, and accessibility, the federal government appears keen to set new benchmarks in infrastructure development across the country.
