Islamabad United kicked off their title defense in style on Friday night, handing Lahore Qalandars a crushing eight-wicket defeat in the opening match of Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
United’s Commanding Chase Led by Munro and Agha
Chasing a modest 140-run target, Islamabad United sailed to victory in just 17.4 overs with eight wickets in hand. Although the home side lost debutant Andries Gous early in the second over for just 8 runs, the innings was quickly stabilized.
Colin Munro and Sahibzada Farhan stitched together a 55-run partnership to rebuild the innings. Farhan contributed a steady 25 off 24 balls before falling to Haris Rauf in the ninth over.

Munro was then joined by Salman Ali Agha, and the duo formed an 80-run unbroken stand that sealed the win for United. Munro remained unbeaten with a commanding 59 off 42 deliveries, striking seven boundaries and a six. Agha provided solid support, scoring 41 not out off 34 balls, hitting three fours and a six.
Lahore’s Struggles with the Bat Continue
Opting to bat first after losing the toss, the Lahore Qalandars struggled from the outset. Star opener Fakhar Zaman departed early, scoring just 1 run, leaving the team reeling at 4/1 in the second over.
Abdullah Shafique was the standout performer for the Qalandars, holding the innings together with a composed 66 off 38 balls, including six boundaries and three sixes. Despite his efforts, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, stalling any momentum the Qalandars tried to build.
Shafique received minimal support apart from brief contributions from Sikandar Raza (23) and Daryl Mitchell (13). The rest of the batting order failed to reach double figures, and the team was bundled out for 139 in 19.2 overs.
Holder, Shadab Lead Ruthless United Bowling Attack
Islamabad’s bowling unit, led by Jason Holder, was clinical in dismantling Lahore’s batting lineup. Holder claimed 4 wickets for 26 runs in his full quota of four overs, proving to be the chief architect of Qalandars’ collapse.
Captain Shadab Khan supported well with a three-wicket haul, while Imad Wasim, Naseem Shah, and Riley Meredith picked up a wicket each.
The tactical decision by Shadab to bowl first paid off handsomely, as his bowlers executed plans to perfection, restricting the Qalandars to a below-par total on a favorable batting pitch.
Standings and Match Impact
With this convincing victory, Islamabad United climbed to the top of the PSL 10 points table, securing 2 points from their opening match. Lahore Qalandars, on the other hand, find themselves at the bottom with a negative net run rate.
This dominant performance sets the tone for United’s campaign and signals a strong intent to defend their title, while Qalandars will need to regroup quickly to bounce back in the coming fixtures.
