Authority Issues Flood Alert Amid Rising River Levels
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of flooding risk across several parts of Pakistan as it issued a report on water flows in rivers and water storage levels in dams.
According to the report, low-level flooding is being reported in the Indus River at Kalabagh, Chashma, Taunsa, and Guddu. Water flows in the Ravi, Chenab, Jhelum, Kabul, and Sutlej rivers are currently normal, while the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, and Nullah Lai are also flowing normally.
Flood Risk by Region
The authority warned of a risk of low to moderate-level flooding in rivers and streams across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Flash floods are also feared in Bagh and Kotli districts of Azad Kashmir. In Balochistan, flooding is feared in Zhob, Musakhel, Kohlu, Barkhan, and Dera Bugti districts.
The NDMA also warned of flooding in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur in Punjab. Urban flooding is possible in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Lahore, according to the report.
Dam Storage Levels
The water level at Tarbela Dam was recorded at 1,548 feet, with storage at 97.94 per cent of capacity. The water level at Mangla Dam stood at 1,205.2 feet, with storage recorded at 62.99 per cent.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as the monsoon season continues to bring heavy rainfall across the country. Citizens in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain cautious and follow instructions from local disaster management authorities
