In a major success for Pakistan’s fight against terrorism, the country’s security forces thwarted a large-scale infiltration attempt from across the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, eliminating 54 militants in the process. The operation took place in the Hassan Khel area of North Waziristan and was confirmed by the military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), on Sunday.
Swift Action Prevents Cross-Border Terror Plot
According to the ISPR, the infiltration was detected on the night between April 25 and 27 when troops observed movement of a group of armed militants attempting to cross into Pakistani territory. Acting swiftly, the security forces engaged the infiltrators with precision, neutralizing all 54 individuals involved.
“These were Khawarij trying to breach our borders. Our forces responded with professionalism and successfully sent all of them to hell,” the ISPR said in a strongly worded statement, referring to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) by the term “Khawarij,” which denotes traitors or rebels in religious terminology.
Large Cache of Weapons Recovered
In addition to killing the militants, the troops recovered a large cache of weapons, explosives, and ammunition from the site. The ISPR revealed that intelligence reports had indicated the group was tasked with executing high-profile terrorist attacks within Pakistan on the instructions of “foreign masters,” suggesting possible external sponsorship.
The security forces’ preparedness and rapid response were praised as preventing a potentially devastating terror attack within the country.
India Accused of Strategic Diversion
The ISPR also linked the timing of the infiltration attempt to broader geopolitical developments, particularly allegations made by India against Pakistan in recent weeks. The military’s statement suggested that distracting Pakistan’s armed forces from their focus on counter-terrorism might be part of India’s strategic aim—an effort to give terrorist elements room to operate.
“This attempt aligns suspiciously with India’s baseless accusations against Pakistan and appears to support terrorists by providing them breathing space,” the ISPR noted. “These actions are a betrayal against the state and its citizens.”
Historic Success in Single Engagement
The military emphasized the scale of the operation by calling it the most successful single engagement in Pakistan’s ongoing campaign against terrorism. The killing of 54 militants in one operation marks the highest-ever toll recorded in such a clash, symbolizing a significant blow to the TTP and its operational capabilities.
Security forces reiterated their unwavering commitment to securing the nation’s borders and eliminating the terrorist threat. “Such bold and decisive actions strengthen the national resolve,” the ISPR said.
Persistent Border Security Challenges
Pakistan and Afghanistan share a porous 2,500-kilometer border with several official and unofficial crossings. While these crossings are crucial for trade and cross-border communities, they also present constant security challenges.
PM Shehbaz Warns of “Full-Force Response” Amid Pahalgam Tensions with India
Islamabad has repeatedly urged the Taliban-led administration in Kabul to prevent its soil from being used by groups such as the TTP. Pakistan’s concerns were echoed in a recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) report, which confirmed operational, logistical, and financial links between the TTP and entities based in Afghanistan.
Escalation in Terror Activity
The thwarted infiltration comes at a time of heightened militant activity. According to data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), the country witnessed a sharp 42% rise in terror attacks in January 2025 compared to December 2024. A total of 74 attacks were recorded that month, resulting in 91 deaths and 117 injuries, including those of security personnel and civilians.
Earlier in April, a similar infiltration attempt was repelled by Pakistani forces in the same region, leading to the deaths of eight militants. The back-to-back encounters point to a growing urgency in countering the rising threat from the TTP and similar outfits.
National Security: A United Front
The ISPR referenced the recent meeting of Pakistan’s Parliamentary Committee on National Security, underscoring the importance of a unified national stance against terrorism. The military’s efforts, it stated, should not be diverted or undermined by foreign narratives or internal political distractions.
As the country continues its long-standing war against terrorism, the armed forces’ latest success in North Waziristan stands as a reminder of their vigilance and resolve.
