Sharp Price Increase After Two-Day Break
The federal government on Monday announced a significant increase in fuel prices, raising petrol by Rs12.90 per litre and high-speed diesel by Rs3.72 per litre . According to the notification, petrol will now be available at Rs358.77 per litre, while diesel has been increased to Rs381.77 per litre.
The latest increase comes amid frequent changes in petroleum prices, which are directly linked to fluctuations in international oil markets. The government had previously kept prices unchanged for two days, but the sharp adjustment reflects the volatility in global energy markets driven by Middle East tensions.
Government Responds to Inflation Concerns
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal stated that “if tensions in the region ease, oil prices will also come down,” adding that the government was working to help reduce regional tensions. His remarks came as the government faces growing public concern over rising fuel costs.
JI Demands Levy Reduction, Negotiations Continue
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has called on the government to reduce the petroleum levy by Rs80 per litre, with both sides now at the negotiating table . JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said the party’s negotiating team had presented its proposals with detailed arguments, while the government had sought time to consult various departments before responding.
The government assured JI it would consider the party’s proposals for providing relief to consumers hit by rising petrol and diesel prices, with another round of talks scheduled in three days . JI deputy chief Liaquat Baloch said the party had presented six proposals aimed at providing relief to the public, including the withdrawal of the Rs80-per-litre petroleum levy on petrol and diesel.
The repeated revisions in petrol and diesel prices have placed an additional burden on consumers, with the latest increase coming amid ongoing volatility in global oil markets.
