Large-Scale Fire at EPZ Factory
A fire broke out at a factory in Karachi’s Landhi Export Processing Zone on Monday, with KMC Fire and Rescue, Rescue 1122, and Sindh Rangers personnel taking part in the firefighting and rescue operation . No casualties have been reported so far, as all workers were evacuated before the fire spread. However, the building has been declared dangerous by fire brigade officials, and the fire is still burning inside.
Fire Spreads to Upper Floors
According to fire brigade officials, the fire started on the ground floor of the ground-plus-two-storey building before spreading to the upper floors. The factory housed a large stock of old clothes, which fueled the blaze . Thick smoke was hampering firefighting efforts, with crews battling the blaze from outside the building due to the intensity of the smoke.
SSP Malir confirmed there was no other major challenge apart from the firefighting operation. A heavy police contingent was deployed at the site, while Rangers personnel assisted rescue and firefighting teams and maintained traffic flow around the building.
CM Sindh Orders Additional Resources
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident and directed authorities to use all available resources to contain the fire and ensure the safety of those at the factory . He ordered additional fire tenders and rescue equipment to be sent to the site and directed fire and rescue teams to intensify the operation .
Murad also instructed police to ensure security and traffic management during the rescue operation and directed all relevant departments to remain at the site until it was completed. He sought a report on the incident from the Karachi commissioner and the relevant administration.
Access Restricted at EPZ
Security personnel prevented media vehicles from entering the Export Processing Zone and also stopped employees of other companies in the area from entering, with no immediate reason given for the restrictions .
The Sindh Rangers spokesperson said the force’s personnel reached the site in view of the seriousness of the incident and were assisting fire brigade and rescue teams . The spokesperson said protecting lives and preventing the fire from spreading remained the priority.
