A tragic plane crash near I-95 in Boca Raton, Florida, on Friday morning claimed the lives of three people and left one bystander injured. The aircraft, a Cessna 310, went down around 10:20 AM shortly after taking off from Boca Raton Airport, en route to Tallahassee International Airport.

Aircraft Crashes Onto Tri-Rail Tracks

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the twin-engine aircraft crashed onto the Tri-Rail tracks not far from the North Military Trail overpass, causing a fiery explosion that shook surrounding buildings and startled residents and commuters.

Assistant Fire Chief Michael LaSalle confirmed that all three people aboard the aircraft were killed on impact. A fourth person — a motorist on the ground — sustained non-life-threatening injuries, possibly after their vehicle drove through the crash site as the aircraft exploded into flames.

Witnesses Describe Moments Before and After the Crash

Eyewitnesses and nearby workers reported seeing the plane flying unusually low just before it disappeared behind the treeline.

“There was a loud boom, the windows shook, and then a cloud of smoke and fire,” said one local office worker in an interview with CBS News.

Another said the crash impact felt “like an earthquake”, with buildings trembling from the shock.

Aviation expert Willard Shepard noted that a witness observed the aircraft appearing to be in distress shortly after takeoff, possibly attempting to return to the airport before the crash occurred. Investigators will now analyze flight path data, engine performance, and weather conditions as they search for answers.

FAA, NTSB Launch Full Investigation

Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have opened a formal investigation into the incident. Officials said it’s still too early to determine the exact cause of the crash, and a detailed analysis will take place in the coming days.

Investigators are expected to examine:

  • Flight data and cockpit recordings
  • Engine and mechanical systems
  • Air traffic communications
  • Witness reports and security footage

Major Road and Rail Closures Cause Travel Disruptions

As a result of the crash, North Military Trail has been closed between Northwest 19th Street and Butts Road, and the I-95 overpass at Glades Road is shut in both directions. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area due to extended closures and ongoing emergency operations.

Meanwhile, Tri-Rail services have been suspended in the affected zone. A bus bridge is being arranged to transport commuters between Deerfield Beach and Boca Raton stations.

Aerial footage from news helicopters showed debris scattered across the railway tracks, a burnt-out vehicle near a tree, and fire crews dousing the area with flame retardant. It remains unclear whether the vehicle is linked to the injured person on the ground.

Investigation Ongoing Amid Questions About Aircraft Distress

As the investigation continues, experts and aviation authorities will seek to determine whether the aircraft suffered a mechanical failure, loss of control, or other technical issue that led to the deadly crash.

With the aircraft crashing shortly after takeoff and seemingly attempting to return to the airport, flight data will be crucial in reconstructing what happened in those final minutes.
