In a recent development, Shahnawaz Amir, the main accused in the murder of Sarah Inam and son of journalist Ayaz Amir, was acquitted by an Islamabad court in a case related to the unlawful possession of a Kalashnikov rifle. The court granted Shahnawaz Amir the benefit of the doubt and expressed dissatisfaction with the flawed investigation conducted by the police.

Judicial Magistrate Umar Shabbir, who presided over the Kalashnikov recovery case, issued a formal written judgment, highlighting the prosecution’s failure to prove the case against the accused and pointing out loopholes in the evidence presented. The verdict emphasized the accused’s right to benefit from the doubt.

Meanwhile, the final arguments in the Sarah Inam murder case are ongoing, and a verdict is expected after the conclusion of these proceedings. Shahnawaz Amir was arrested by Islamabad Police on September 23 of the previous year for the alleged murder of his Canadian national wife at a farmhouse in the federal capital. The police later recovered an illegal Kalashnikov from his possession, leading to the separate case related to the firearm.

In December of the same year, the court indicted Shahnawaz Amir and his mother Sameena Shah in the Sarah Inam murder case. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges. Sarah Inam, a 37-year-old Canadian national and accomplished economist, was married to Shahnawaz for only three months before her tragic death. The ongoing legal proceedings aim to determine the circumstances surrounding her murder.
