Islamabad, July 7, 2025:Â Just a day after the river Seine was re-opened for swimming for the first time in over a century, access to it has been blocked once again.
As expected, the concern was linked to water contamination and, therefore, public safety. Nearly 3,000 excited yet visibly nervous swimmers entered the river on Saturday, July 5th at three approved public areas equipped with nearby changing cabins, showers, and even seaside-style seating.
Vows to make the river swimmable extend back to 1988, yet efforts to eliminate harmful bacteria contamination from the water remain unsuccessful.

When Seine river was intended to host the competitive triathlon swimming in 2024, the contests had to be called off due to hazardous pollution readings.
Organizers of the Olympics were optimistic that the river would meet cleanliness standards before the event; however, they had to face disappointment at the end.

Currently, although there were assurances of public swimming chances continuing through the end of August 2025, recent rainfall and potential sewage overflow have forced officials to declare the river temporarily off-limits. Over a century after the initial restriction, taking a dip in the Seine appears just as unlikely as ever.
