President Alvi

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court was petitioned on Saturday to remove Dr. Arif Alvi from the presidency of Pakistan, accusing him of not adhering to the responsibilities of the highest office and displaying bias.

The petitioner, Ghulam Murtaza Khan, alleged that President Alvi had evaded constitutional obligations and engaged in gross misconduct, rendering him ineligible to continue as president.

The petitioner asserted that as the head of state, the president is constitutionally obligated to act in accordance with the law. However, he claimed that President Alvi misused powers, violated the Constitution through words and actions, and allegedly favored the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party.

Citing the dissolution of the National Assembly in April 2022, the petitioner contended that President Alvi’s actions, including supporting PTI, were unconstitutional and biased. The petitioner argued that the president, as a representative of the entire nation, should ensure peace and act impartially, without favoring any political party.

The petition highlighted instances such as the non-assent to the Official Secrets Amendment Bill and the Pakistan Army Amendment Bill, considering them as grave misconduct and evidence of a partial stance. The petitioner also criticized President Alvi’s controversial statements, including remarks on the Israel-Palestine conflict contrary to Pakistan’s foreign policy.

Alleging violations of constitutional provisions (Article 5 and 12) and misconduct, the petitioner called for a declaration that President Alvi should not continue in office. The petition emphasized the need for the president to embody clarity, neutrality, and commitment to the betterment, development, welfare, prestige, peace, and prosperity of the country. The Supreme Court is now tasked with considering the merits of the petition.
