Trump Claims Five Jets Downed in India-Pakistan Conflict

In a surprising revelation, former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that five fighter jets were shot down during the recent escalation between India and Pakistan, aligning with assertions made by Pakistani officials. Trump made the comments during a private dinner with Republican lawmakers at the White House on Friday, without offering further evidence or clarification.

“Planes were being shot out of the air. Five, five, four or five, but I think five jets were shot down actually,” said Trump, referring to the cross-border aerial clashes.

Conflicting Narratives from India and Pakistan

Trump’s remarks appear to support Pakistan’s claim that it shot down five Indian aircraft during the conflict. These claims have been hotly contested by Indian military officials, who insist that only one Indian jet—a MiG-21—was downed and that no Rafale fighter jets were lost.

However, some international media outlets have reported debris and visual evidence that suggest multiple Indian aircraft may have been downed, adding a layer of ambiguity to the incident.

Trump’s Role in Ceasefire Talks

The former president also used the occasion to express frustration that he has not received adequate recognition for his alleged role in brokering a ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. Trump announced the ceasefire via social media on May 10, crediting diplomatic efforts by Washington.

Indian officials, however, disputed this version of events, stating that the ceasefire was the result of direct negotiations between India and Pakistan, without U.S. mediation.

“There was no third-party intervention,” an Indian foreign ministry official told reporters. “The ceasefire was arranged through bilateral military and diplomatic channels.”

Strategic Ties and Regional Diplomacy

The statement comes at a sensitive time in U.S.–South Asia relations. The U.S. continues to view India as a key strategic partner in efforts to counter China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Simultaneously, under Trump’s administration, Pakistan saw renewed diplomatic engagement, particularly on issues relating to Afghanistan and counterterrorism.

Though local Pakistani media speculated about a potential Trump visit to Pakistan, the White House clarified on Thursday that no such trip is currently planned.

Unverified Claims and Geopolitical Implications

Trump’s claims, lacking independent verification, have added to the already murky picture surrounding the aerial confrontations. With both countries presenting conflicting accounts and no international investigation announced so far, the true scale of the aerial conflict remains uncertain.

Given the fragile peace in the region, such remarks from a former U.S. president could potentially reignite tensions or influence ongoing diplomatic narratives.
