Islamabad, June 19, 2025: In a groundbreaking step toward solving the twin crises of water and energy scarcity, a research team at Khalifa University has unveiled a solar-powered water purification system that also generates electricity. This dual-function technology could reshape how remote and off-grid communities’ access essential resources.

At the heart of this innovation is a unique combination of concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) technology and membrane distillation. While solar panels typically lose energy as heat, the Khalifa University team has designed a system that recycles this heat to purify water using thermal processes—without relying on fossil fuels.

Dual Benefits: Clean Water and Electricity from the Sun

Led by Dr. Mohamed Ali, Dr. Kabir Ali, and Dr. Mostafa Ismail, the project was recently published in the peer-reviewed Energy journal. “Instead of allowing solar heat to dissipate unused, we’ve turned it into a tool for clean water production,” said Dr. Mohamed Ali. “This supports sustainability, especially in arid regions where power and clean water are scarce.”

Lab-Tested and Climate-Ready

To ensure real-world reliability, the system was modeled using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The researchers tested its performance under various sunlight levels, seasons, and water flow conditions. Results showed peak water output during summer afternoons, while electricity production peaked at midday—the most intense sunlight hours.

Energy Efficient and Scalable

One of the standout features of the hybrid unit is its low energy requirement, needing power mainly for water circulation. This gives it a major edge over traditional desalination plants, which are both energy-intensive and expensive to run.

While the team acknowledges remaining challenges—such as durability in harsh climates and scalability—the breakthrough opens new doors for off-grid electricity and water generation in underserved areas.
