Wasim Akram Voices Concern
Former Pakistan captain and legendary all-rounder Wasim Akram has joined the growing calls for proper medical treatment for former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, saying there can be no compromise over his health .
Akram expressed concern over the health of his former captain, who has been incarcerated at Adiala Jail since August 2023 . “There can be no compromise on his health,” Akram said .
Former Cricketers’ Appeal
Akram’s remarks come amid renewed calls from cricketing legends for Pakistani authorities to ensure that the former prime minister receives appropriate medical care. Earlier, 22 former international cricket captains wrote to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, urging the government to address concerns surrounding Khan’s health and ensure that he receives the medical treatment recommended by doctors and directed by the courts .
The former captains questioned the circumstances surrounding Khan’s medical examination after he was taken to a government hospital and subsequently returned to Adiala Jail. They also raised concerns over the implementation of a Supreme Court direction regarding Khan’s medical examination, including the involvement of his personal physicians and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan .
Government Maintains Compliance
The appeal marked the second intervention by former international cricketers within months over Khan’s health . In February, a group of 14 former international cricketers had also expressed concern over the PTI founder’s health and called on Pakistani authorities to facilitate his medical treatment.
The government has rejected allegations that Khan has been denied adequate medical care and has maintained that he is receiving treatment and medical facilities in accordance with the rules applicable to prisoners.
Khan, 73, has remained incarcerated since August 5, 2023 . He has been convicted in several cases, while PTI maintains that the cases against its founder are politically motivated.
