In a major step toward modernizing its immigration system, the United Kingdom has officially introduced electronic visas (e-Visas) for the majority of Pakistani nationals applying for study or work visas. This digital transition, which began on July 15, 2025, was confirmed by the British High Commission in Islamabad and is expected to bring more convenience, speed, and security to the visa application process.
New e-Visa System Announced by UK High Commissioner
Jane Marriott, the UK’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, announced the development through her official social media channels. She emphasized the advantages of the new e-Visa system, calling it a “modern, secure, and user-friendly” alternative to traditional visa processing.
Marriott highlighted that the change will apply to most students and workers applying for UK visas lasting longer than six months. She noted that this move aligns with the UK government’s commitment to transition to a fully digital immigration system in the near future.
No More Passport Submissions for Eligible Applicants
One of the most notable benefits of the new system is that applicants no longer need to submit their physical passports to receive a visa sticker. Instead, once approved, applicants will receive a digital visa confirmation through their UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online account.
This digital record serves as proof of the individual’s immigration status and includes any associated conditions, such as work or study permissions. The digital system also allows users to securely share their visa status with employers, landlords, educational institutions, or other organizations using the UK’s “View and Prove” service.
Who Is Covered Under the New e-Visa Policy?
The initial rollout covers main applicants in several major visa categories, including:
- Students, including those applying for short-term study (up to 11 months)
- Skilled Workers, particularly in sectors such as healthcare and social care
- Global Talent visa holders
- International Sportspersons
- Temporary Workers, such as charity or creative sector workers
- Youth Mobility Scheme participants
- Global Business Mobility visa holders
Who Is Still Receiving Physical Visas?
At this stage, dependents of main applicants and individuals applying under non-study or non-work categories—such as visitor visas—will still receive physical visa stickers. However, the UK government has indicated that it plans to extend the digital visa system to all categories in the future.

Existing Visa Holders Do Not Need to Take Action
For those who already hold valid UK visas with physical stickers, the British High Commission confirmed that there is no immediate need for concern or action. Their current visa status and rights will remain unchanged, and they can continue to travel and reside in the UK as per the existing visa terms.
Benefits of the e-Visa System
The UK government sees several advantages in the shift to e-Visas:
- Enhanced Security: Digital records are less vulnerable to loss, theft, or fraud.
- Increased Convenience: Applicants can retain their passports during processing.
- Streamlined Verification: Employers and landlords can quickly verify visa details online.
- Improved Accessibility: All information is stored in a central, secure online account.
A Step Toward a Fully Digital Immigration Future
The transition to e-Visas reflects the UK government’s broader strategy to digitize all immigration services. By moving away from physical documentation, the UK aims to simplify border control, reduce administrative burden, and improve transparency and security in visa issuance.
The British Home Office has expressed plans to eventually phase out physical visa labels entirely, ensuring that all visa types—across both short-term and long-term categories—will be incorporated into the digital immigration platform.
