BEIRUT – A French UN peacekeeper was killed and three others wounded on April 18 2026 after a UNIFIL patrol came under small-arms fire in southern Lebanon’s Ghanduriyah village marking a sharp escalation in tensions despite a recently announced 10-day ceasefire .

The patrol was clearing explosive ordnance along a road to re-establish links with isolated UN positions when it was attacked by what UNIFIL described as “non-state actors allegedly Hezbollah” . Sergeant Major Florian Montorio of the 17th Parachute Engineer Regiment succumbed to his injuries while two of the three wounded are in serious condition .

French President Emmanuel Macron said “everything suggests Hezbollah was responsible” and demanded Lebanese authorities immediately arrest the perpetrators . Hezbollah has denied any involvement urging caution pending the Lebanese Army’s investigation .

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the “deliberate attack” warning that assaults on peacekeepers “may amount to war crimes” . This marks the third incident in recent weeks resulting in peacekeeper deaths in Lebanon .

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the attack and vowed to prosecute those responsible . The incident comes just two days after Israel and Lebanon agreed to a 10-day cessation of hostilities to negotiate an end to six weeks of war between Israel and Hezbollah .

UNIFIL has launched an investigation and called on the Lebanese government to swiftly hold the perpetrators accountable
