United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned Israel’s continued blockade of Gaza, calling the besieged enclave a “killing field” as it faces an escalating humanitarian crisis. In a statement, Guterres emphasized the dire situation in Gaza, where the population of 2.3 million people has been trapped in what he described as an “endless death loop” amid ongoing Israeli bombardments.
Guterres expressed grave concern over the lack of aid entering Gaza, with no shipments of food, fuel, medicine, or commercial supplies for over a month. The suspension of humanitarian aid since March 2 has left Gaza’s population without essential resources, exacerbating an already catastrophic crisis.
“More than an entire month has passed without a drop of aid into Gaza. No food. No fuel. No medicine. No commercial supplies,” Guterres said, stressing the urgency of the situation. He condemned Israel’s recent proposal to control the entry of aid, rejecting it as an attempt to “further control and callously limit aid down to the last calorie and grain of flour.”
UN’s Commitment to Humanitarian Principles
Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to delivering aid in accordance with international humanitarian principles of impartiality, humanity, independence, and neutrality. He made it clear that the UN would not engage in any arrangements that did not fully respect these principles, particularly in light of Israel’s proposal to monitor aid entry.
Israel’s military, through its COGAT unit, had met with UN agencies last week to propose a “structured monitoring and aid entry mechanism” in an effort to address concerns over aid diversion by Hamas. However, UN officials, including Jonathan Whittall, have denied any evidence supporting claims that aid was being diverted.

He stated, “None of that is happening today,” highlighting the blockade’s detrimental impact on Gaza’s population.
International Leaders Call for Action
The growing humanitarian disaster in Gaza has drawn condemnation from world leaders. French President Emmanuel Macron has joined calls for the blockade to be lifted and for humanitarian aid to reach the Palestinian population. Macron, during a visit to the Egyptian city of El Arish, a key transit point for Gaza-bound aid, urged Israel to allow the delivery of vital supplies.
Macron and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi also visited a hospital in El Arish, where many Palestinians injured in the ongoing conflict have been treated. Both leaders emphasized the urgent need for an immediate return to a ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid to reach Gaza and alleviate the suffering of its people.
In addition to France, leaders from Egypt and Jordan, including President el-Sisi and King Abdullah II, have echoed calls for a ceasefire and the resumption of aid to Gaza. They have called for an “immediate return” to a ceasefire to allow much-needed humanitarian assistance to reach those affected by the war.
Gaza’s Devastating Humanitarian Crisis
