US set up an Afghani monetary fund without Taliban

After concluding it cannot trust the Taliban leadership with the country’s money, the United States said on Wednesday that it was establishing an external, professionally operated fund to manage Afghanistan’s $3.5 billion in reserves.

Multiple officials said that core central bank functions, such as paying Afghanistan’s foreign arrears and its electricity imports, will be handed over to the Geneva-based new Afghan Fund, but humanitarian relief and government salaries will not be among them, according to multiple officials.
