Vinicius Junior’s victory comes just two months after he finished second in the prestigious Ballon d’Or voting. Despite Real Madrid’s absence from the ceremony due to their displeasure over Manchester City’s Rodri winning the award, Vinicius was present in Doha to collect the FIFA Best accolade, as he is currently with the club in Qatar ahead of their Intercontinental Cup final against Pachuca.
Vinicius succeeds Lionel Messi, who had won the FIFA Best Men’s Player award for the past two years. The Brazilian forward had an exceptional 2023, netting 24 goals and providing 11 assists in 39 matches across all competitions. His efforts were instrumental in leading Real Madrid to both a La Liga and Champions League double.
In addition to his domestic triumphs, Vinicius contributed to Madrid’s victory in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, scoring the decisive goal at Wembley. Bonmati, 26, played a key role in Barcelona’s historic quadruple-winning season, which included winning the Spanish league, Copa de la Reina, Supercopa de Espana, and the Women’s Champions League.
Her stellar performances continued on the international stage, where she helped Spain lift the Nations League title. Bonmati’s vision, passing, and leadership on the pitch were key to her success, and she was a standout in Barcelona’s 2-0 victory over Lyon in the Champions League final, where she also scored and was named player of the match.
