Zardari & Shehbaz Hold Crucial Talks on AJK Political Future

A high-level meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has set the tone for a significant political reshuffle in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The two leaders held in-depth discussions on the evolving political landscape and the strategy for establishing a new government in the region.

Sources indicate that President Zardari initiated the dialogue to ensure full coordination between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) before finalizing decisions on the AJK political setup. Following the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formed a dedicated AJK Affairs Committee within the PML-N, led by Ahsan Iqbal and including Rana Sanaullah and Amir Muqam, to negotiate directly with PPP representatives.

Within the PPP, Zardari has reportedly endorsed a no-confidence motion against the current AJK Prime Minister, highlighting the party’s determination to lead the next government in the region. This move reflects the broader strategy of strengthening federal-regional coordination and demonstrating unity among coalition partners at the national level.

The discussions between Zardari and Shehbaz also underline the coalition’s intent to bring political stability to AJK, aligning regional governance with Pakistan’s national interests. As talks progress, attention now turns to the negotiations between the PML-N and PPP committees and the potential selection of a new candidate for the AJK premiership.

The outcome of these developments will not only shape the political future of Azad Jammu and Kashmir but could also have lasting implications for Pakistan’s coalition politics and governance model.
