Islamabad, Dec 13: Even while people are preparing for Christmas, researchers already forecast that 2025 shall be among the warmest years.
The Met Office has indicated that 2024 is set to rank as the world’s warmest year since 1850, with 2023 coming in second and 2025 third.
Projected 2022 will be at least 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, and 2023 at 1.45°C.
Forecasts show that 2025 will be at least 1.29°C warmer, and probably closer to 1.4°C, making it the fourth hottest year just ahead of 2020.
However, the dwindling effects of the El Niño weather pattern that boosted 2023 and 2024 average temperatures are real and underpin the accelerating influence of climate change on increasing temperatures.
The greenhouse gas emission through the burning of fossil fuels has remained adamant and causes global warming.
The Met Office scientist, Prof. Adam Scaife said that the 2023/24 El Niño million temporarily increased temperatures to the long-term effects wrought by greenhouse gases.
Scientists are also looking for other causes of the recent increase in temperatures including eruption of the Hunga-Tonga volcano, decrease in the shipping aerosols and strange ocean heatwaves.
Even though the global temperature is gradually increasing the rate is not consistent to make some countries experience cold climate.
Pledges under the 2015 Paris Agreement are to ensure that the global temperature does not rise more than 2°C, preferably 1.5°C, above pre-industrial levels.
But as the UK Climate Envoy Rachel Kyte said recently, we are seeing growing weakness in the agreement and disappointment among the nations about its speed.
