Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo is set to end his 23-year international career after representing Portugal in 234 matches and scoring a record 146 goals.
Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from the Portugal national team, bringing an end to one of the greatest international careers in football history.
The 41-year-old confirmed that he would return Portugal’s iconic No. 7 shirt after the November international break, marking the conclusion of his remarkable 23-year journey with the national side.
Ronaldo described the decision as emotional, saying it was not something he could make with his mind alone, but also with his heart.
“If I ever made you happy, if one of my goals ever made you hug someone, forget a worry or feel proud of our country, then it was all worth it,” he said.
He also thanked his family, Portuguese supporters, teammates, coaches and staff who supported him throughout his international career.
A Legendary Career Filled With Records
Ronaldo leaves international football as Portugal’s most successful player, having made 234 appearances and scored 146 goals. Both figures stand as all-time international records.
He captained Portugal to their historic Euro 2016 triumph and played a key role in winning the UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.
His final international tournament appearance came at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Portugal were eliminated in the last 16 following a 1-0 defeat against eventual champions Spain.
Ronaldo also made history alongside Argentina’s Lionel Messi as one of only two players to feature in six World Cup tournaments.
Portugal Football Federation Pays Tribute
The Portuguese Football Federation expressed its gratitude following the announcement, describing Ronaldo as an exceptional athlete, inspirational leader and symbol of the national team’s identity.
The announcement follows an earlier controversy involving Ronaldo’s departure from the national camp and a subsequent suspension and fine. However, his retirement statement now brings his international journey to a close.
Ronaldo said representing Portugal had been the greatest honour of his life, adding that his biggest achievement was earning the opportunity to play for his country.
His departure marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in football history, but his records and legacy will remain for generations.
