BEIJING — Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek has released a stealth update to its R1 reasoning model, named R1-0528, intensifying competition with leading U.S. players like OpenAI and xAI in the red-hot field of AI code generation.

The model appeared quietly on Hugging Face — a popular developer platform — on Thursday, with no formal announcement or accompanying technical documentation. Despite the subdued launch, the update quickly drew industry attention after its performance surfaced on LiveCodeBench, a prominent benchmark designed by researchers at UC Berkeley, MIT, and Cornell.

Ranks High in Code Generation Performance

On the LiveCodeBench leaderboard, DeepSeek’s R1-0528 ranks just behind OpenAI’s o4 mini and o3 models — but notably ahead of xAI’s Grok 3 mini and Alibaba’s Qwen 3, marking a significant milestone for a Chinese AI contender in code reasoning capabilities.

A DeepSeek representative described the release as a “minor trial upgrade” in a private WeChat group, encouraging developers to begin testing the model immediately.

A Disruptor in Efficient AI Scaling

DeepSeek first made waves in January 2025 with the launch of its R1 model, which delivered competitive performance while using far less computational power and cost compared to U.S. models. The debut shook global markets and forced a rethinking of the assumption that massive infrastructure is a prerequisite for high-performing large language models (LLMs).

The original R1 model’s success prompted rapid strategic shifts from leading players:

  • OpenAI launched its o3 mini to target lightweight use cases.
  • Google’s Gemini project introduced discounted access tiers in response to rising global competition.

Chinese AI Arms Race Intensifies

Major Chinese tech giants such as Alibaba and Tencent have raced to keep up, releasing their own new models. Some internal reports from Alibaba claim its Qwen 3 model outperforms DeepSeek’s R1, though third-party benchmarks tell a more nuanced story.

In parallel, DeepSeek released an update to its V3 large language model in March, expanding its portfolio beyond code generation and reasoning tasks.

Anticipation Builds for R2

Industry insiders continue to speculate about the imminent arrival of R2, DeepSeek’s successor to R1. While the company initially aimed for a May 2025 release, no official launch date has been confirmed, and observers believe the R1-0528 release could be an interim step or testing milestone.

Until then, R1-0528’s strong performance cements DeepSeek’s position as a serious challenger in the global AI arena — and a rare non-Western player holding its own on top-tier benchmarks.
