US, S. Korea To Hold Joint Nuclear Drills Amid Rising Tension With North Korea

The United States and South Korea are planning to hold joint nuclear drills amid rising tension with North Korea.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said, “both the countries are discussing joint planning and exercises using US nuclear assets in the face of North Korea’s growing nuclear and missile threats.”

Quoting South Korean President, Chosun Ilbo newspaper said the joint exercises would be helpful for effective implementation of the US “deterrence.”

“South Korea will conduct joint exercise with the US nuclear weapons, information sharing, exercises, and training,” Yoon said.

South Korean President’s remarks surfaced a day after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un called for developing new intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

Kim also talked about an “exponential increase” in North Korea’s nuclear arsenal to counter US-led threats between the rival Koreas.

Importantly, the North Korea’s race to develop its nuclear and missile programmes has promoted debate over South Korea’s own nuclear weapons.

South Korean President Yoon said that maintaining the NPT of nuclear weapons remains significant.
