rain-and-storm

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecasted to lash several parts of northern and central Pakistan on Sunday, July 6, 2025, which coincides with the 10th of Muharram (Ashura). The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued weather alerts warning of urban flooding risks in major cities due to intense rainfall, particularly in low-lying areas.

Cities Likely to Be Most Affected

The rain system is expected to impact a wide area, with Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Sialkot, Nowshera, and Peshawar among the cities most vulnerable to heavy downpours.

Specific Concerns:

  • Urban flooding may occur in parts of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Lahore, where aging drainage systems and dense construction make low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.
  • Traffic disruptions and power outages are also likely due to thunderstorms and water accumulation on major roads.

Residents are advised to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated through official weather bulletins.

Rain, Thunder to Cover Wide Regions in North Pakistan

Beyond urban centers, widespread rain accompanied by thunder is expected across much of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and the federal capital territory.

Ashura Holidays Announced for July 5-6, 2025

This weather pattern aligns with typical monsoon activity during early July, but its timing with Muharram processions poses additional public safety concerns.

Authorities are coordinating with local administrations to ensure drainage systems are functional and that emergency services remain on standby, particularly near Imambargahs and procession routes.

Hot and Humid Weather Continues in Sindh and Balochistan

While northern Pakistan is bracing for rain, most of Sindh and Balochistan are expected to continue experiencing hot and humid conditions on Sunday.

However, light rain or drizzle may occur in Karachi and Hyderabad, especially during the morning and nighttime hours. These showers are not expected to bring significant relief from the humidity but could provide brief cooling during an otherwise warm day.

Public Advised to Remain Cautious and Plan Ahead

The PMD and local authorities urge the public to:

  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor activity, especially during processions.
  • Secure household items and protect electrical equipment.
  • Refrain from driving through waterlogged roads or underpasses.
  • Stay informed via official weather alerts and emergency announcements.

Given the religious significance of the 10th of Muharram, coordination between weather agencies, local governments, and religious organizers is key to ensuring public safety during Ashura-related gatherings.
