The Federal Government has officially declared Saturday, July 5, and Sunday, July 6, 2025, as public holidays to observe Ashura — the 9th and 10th of Muharram-ul-Haram 1447 A.H. The Cabinet Division issued a formal notification, confirming that all federal institutions, offices, and corporations will remain closed during these two days.
However, essential services such as hospitals, emergency services, and law enforcement will continue to function normally.
Ashura: A Day of Remembrance and Reverence
Ashura holds deep religious and historical significance for Muslims around the world. The 10th of Muharram marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A.), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala along with his loyal companions.
In Pakistan, large mourning processions, majalis (religious gatherings), and other rituals are held to honor their sacrifice. The two-day holiday gives citizens across the country the opportunity to fully participate in these spiritual observances.
Security Measures Tightened Nationwide
In anticipation of Ashura processions and gatherings, strict security arrangements are being implemented across major cities. Law enforcement agencies, including police and Rangers, have been directed to maintain high alert levels to ensure public safety.
