Underage drivers
LAHORE: The traffic police apprehended a total of 248 underage drivers within the past 24 hours. The Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) issued a stern warning to parents, urging them to discourage their children from operating vehicles.
This crackdown by Lahore’s traffic police stemmed from a tragic incident last Saturday, resulting in the loss of six lives, including two infants and two women. During the recent 24-hour initiative, 248 drivers were taken into custody, and corresponding cases were registered against them.
To bolster these efforts, the CTO directed all circle and sector in-charges in the district to enforce stringent measures against underage drivers, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding road users.
The directive included the establishment of roadblocks at critical locations to identify and take action against underage drivers. Vehicles and motorcycles driven by underage individuals would be impounded in police stations and sectors, accompanied by the issuance of tickets.
In a notable shift, the CTO underscored that, instead of mere fines, cases would be registered against underage drivers, emphasizing the gravity of the offense. Parents were implored not to permit their children to take control of vehicles. The traffic police disclosed that a substantial 22,000 challans were issued against young drivers over the course of the current year.
