In a bold step towards modernizing traffic enforcement and improving road safety, the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has launched a drone-based surveillance initiative across major roads of the capital city. The campaign, now in its first phase, is focused on the Expressway and Srinagar Highway, where more than 300 traffic violators have already been fined, and over 350 citizens educated on traffic regulations.
This marks a significant technological upgrade for ITP, which seeks to strengthen law enforcement through smarter, real-time monitoring techniques.
Real-Time Surveillance and Action
According to an ITP spokesperson, the drone-based monitoring system enables instant detection of traffic violations, allowing law enforcement officers to take immediate action. Offenses being tracked include:
- Lane violations
- Illegal overtaking
- Overloading
- One-wheeling
- Other dangerous driving behaviors
The spokesperson confirmed that serious violations have resulted in not only on-the-spot fines but also the impoundment of vehicles, with several transported to nearby police stations for further action.
“This initiative is not just about punishing violators but also about reshaping driving behavior through consistent, visible enforcement,” the spokesperson stated.
Data-Driven Traffic Management
Beyond enforcement, drone technology is also being used for strategic traffic management. The surveillance system helps identify high-congestion zones, enabling the ITP’s special response teams to be deployed efficiently.
These insights allow for better real-time decision-making, ensuring that bottlenecks are dealt with swiftly, emergency lanes remain clear, and accident-prone areas are closely monitored.
Public Awareness as a Key Component
Alongside enforcement, the campaign prioritizes public education. More than 350 citizens have so far been approached by officers with traffic guidelines and awareness materials.
The ITP is promoting a culture of voluntary compliance and civic responsibility through direct interaction, public service announcements, and digital campaigns.
This two-pronged approach—combining tech-based enforcement with human-centric education—is intended to foster safer roads for all.
Leadership Perspective: Scaling the Initiative
Chief Traffic Officer Captain (R) Syed Zeeshan Haider, while briefing media, expressed satisfaction with the results of the initial phase.
“Drone technology is proving highly effective in identifying violations instantly and ensuring swift, transparent enforcement,” he said.
He confirmed that the next phase of the initiative would involve expansion of drone operations to all sectors of Islamabad, including additional arterial roads and intersections known for frequent traffic rule violations.

The scaling of this initiative, he added, is part of a larger ITP strategy aimed at aligning Islamabad with international best practices in traffic management and urban mobility.
Drones in Policing: A Modern Approach
The deployment of drones is part of a broader trend of adopting technology in law enforcement across Pakistan. While previously drones were used primarily for security surveillance and event management, ITP’s approach reflects a shift toward routine, smart urban monitoring.
Key advantages of drone deployment in traffic enforcement include:
- Aerial visibility over large road stretches
- Reduced dependence on manual checkpoints
- Transparent, recorded evidence of violations
- Quick deployment to congested or high-risk areas
With these capabilities, the ITP aims to build a fair, efficient, and corruption-free enforcement environment.
Public Response and Expectations
The public response to the initiative has been largely positive, particularly from daily commuters and citizens advocating for safer roads. However, concerns remain about privacy, data usage, and the potential for over-surveillance. The ITP has reassured the public that drone use is strictly limited to traffic-related monitoring and that data is securely managed under defined protocols.
Furthermore, the success of the campaign will likely be judged not just by the number of fines issued but by tangible improvements in driving behavior, accident reduction, and smoother traffic flow in the months to come.
