At least 32 people have been confirmed dead after a tragic bus crash in southeastern Brazil on Saturday. The accident occurred in Minas Gerais state, involving a bus traveling from Sao Paulo. According to officials, the death toll could rise, as some bodies remain trapped and unaccounted for.

Conflicting Accounts of the Cause of the Crash

Initial reports from firefighters suggested that the bus had blown a tire near the town of Lajinha, causing the driver to lose control and collide with a truck. Another vehicle then reportedly struck the bus from behind, though the passengers in that vehicle survived. However, later accounts indicated that witnesses described a landslide, where a large granite block collapsed onto the bus. This could have caused the crash and the subsequent fire that engulfed the vehicle.

Search and Rescue Efforts

Firefighters worked for several hours to extinguish the flames and remove victims from the wreckage. As of the latest reports, they have recovered 22 charred bodies from inside the bus. The operation is ongoing, and officials warn that the death toll may rise further. Thirteen survivors were rescued and sought medical attention, though many were injured.

A crane is expected to be used to clear the wreckage, as more victims may still be trapped in the remains of the vehicle. Fire department officials, including Lieutenant Alonso Vieira Junior, confirmed that the recovery operation is complex and ongoing.
