Yellowjackets season 3 opens with a shocking twist that has fans reeling—Shauna, after enduring extreme trauma, enters into a relationship with Melissa. The character of Shauna, played by Sophie Nélisse, has always been a complex and layered figure, but this new development takes her emotional journey to a whole new level.
Shauna’s Emotional Struggles After Loss
In the first episode of the new season, Shauna’s life continues to unravel following a series of devastating events. Having suffered the loss of her child and partaking in the gruesome act of cannibalism with her fellow survivors, Shauna has hit a rock bottom emotionally. Actress Sophie Nélisse, who portrays Shauna, shared her thoughts on the character’s current state.
“Shauna is probably at the lowest point of her life,” Nélisse remarked, explaining that her character has been through unimaginable trauma. “I think she’s undergone so much loss and trauma that she has nothing else to lose. I think all of that guilt and shame is too much for her to bear on her shoulders.”
The weight of these events has shaped Shauna into someone who is unable to process her emotions in healthy ways. Nélisse emphasized how this emotional burden is overwhelming for Shauna, who needs support but doesn’t have the tools to handle the depth of her feelings.
A Complex Relationship with Melissa
Shauna’s relationship with Melissa, portrayed by Jenna Burgess, offers a surprising twist to her already complicated emotional state. Despite the trauma she’s faced, Shauna seeks connection, which leads to the unexpected kiss shared between them. For Nélisse, Shauna’s pursuit of this relationship comes from a deep yearning for love and validation, but it also highlights her inability to fully connect with herself.
“I think she’s not able to love herself,” Nélisse said. “And I don’t think she’s then able to love anyone else, even though I think that what she desperately needs is to be held and told it wasn’t her fault and told that everything’s gonna be okay and that someone forgives her.”
This relationship with Melissa is likely an attempt by Shauna to fill the void left by her immense grief and guilt, but Nélisse suggests that it’s an act driven by desperation and emotional need rather than true connection or healing.
Shauna’s Anger and Need for Therapy
Shauna’s emotional turmoil is palpable in season 3, and Nélisse notes that the character’s intense feelings of anger and guilt are central to her actions. “I think she needs to shift all of that energy and … convey it into anger, which she’ll project on all of these other characters,” Nélisse explained. This anger seems to be Shauna’s way of coping with everything she has lost and the overwhelming emotions she is unable to process in a healthy way.
The actress also joked that Shauna could certainly benefit from more therapy sessions, though there’s no one around to offer the kind of emotional support she truly needs. “Unfortunately Lottie’s the only one around, and not very resourceful,” she quipped, referencing the character played by Courtney Eaton.
Despite the challenges, Nélisse believes that Shauna’s journey is one of self-discovery. “She desperately needs to be held,” the actress explained. “She needs someone to tell her that it’s not her fault and that everything’s going to be okay.” The emotional support that Shauna lacks is something many fans will likely hope for her as the season progresses.
