Nicholas Brendon, the actor best known for his role as Xander Harris on the hit television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has died at the age of 54 .
Brendon died on Friday, March 20, 2026, in his sleep of natural causes, his family confirmed in a statement posted to his Instagram account . “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” the statement read. “He passed in his sleep of natural causes” .

Brendon played the quick-witted, loyal Xander Harris for all seven seasons of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” from 1997 to 2003 . As part of the core “Scooby Gang” alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy and Alyson Hannigan’s Willow, Xander provided comic relief and unwavering heart. His performance earned him three Saturn Award nominations during the show’s run .
Life After Sunnydale
Following the conclusion of “Buffy,” Brendon continued acting, most notably as Kevin Lynch, a technical analyst and love interest to Penelope Garcia on “Criminal Minds” . His other credits include “Private Practice,” “Kitchen Confidential,” and films such as “Psycho Beach Party” and the indie sci-fi thriller “Coherence” .
Brendon was open about his personal struggles with addiction, mental health, and physical health issues over the years . In recent years, he found a new creative outlet in painting and art, which his family described as “one of the purest reflections of who he was” .

Alyson Hannigan, who played his on-screen best friend Willow, posted a photo of them together, writing: “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP” .
His death comes just over a year after the passing of his “Buffy” co-star Michelle Trachtenberg .
