Consumers across the country may face an extra charge of Rs3.53 per unit in their electricity bills starting next month. The Central Purchasing Power Authority (CPPA) is set to convene a hearing on Wednesday to conclude the adjustment in electricity costs, reflecting the escalating expenses for generation companies.
If the CPPA approves the proposed increase, consumers will shoulder an additional financial burden of Rs40 billion. This incremental cost encompasses Rs0.36 attributed to fuel cost adjustment charges and Rs3.16 in terms of arrears.
The outstanding dues, particularly in fuel prices, stand at a substantial Rs28 billion. Consumers, who are already contending with historically high electricity bills, faced widespread protests across the country in August, stemming from unexpectedly elevated bills.
In response to public concerns, the government initiated a crackdown on electricity theft nationwide. This active effort is part of broader measures aimed at addressing the challenges posed by the surge in electricity costs and enhancing the overall efficiency of the power sector.
