First-ever FIR

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: Karachi police registered the first-ever FIR after recovering an unclaimed body of a newborn baby.

Karachi police registered the FIR after strict orders by the Inspector General (IG) of Sindh police.

The Ittehad Town police officials registered a case against unidentified individuals who disposed of the newborn’s body in a garbage corner. Police registered the case under sections relating to abortion and other relevant laws.

The Civil Hospital conducted a post-mortem examination of the newborn’s body, during which three samples, including DNA, were collected. Once the post-mortem report is issued, the police will proceed with their investigation, according to ARY report.

The issue of unclaimed newborn bodies prompted the Sindh police to issue stringent orders for the mandatory registration of First Information Reports (FIRs) and medical examinations of all such bodies across the province.

The IG Sindh took notice of the police negligence in following legal procedures after several instances of unclaimed newborn bodies being disposed of in garbage sites and unattended areas were reported.

To address this problem, the IG Sindh office directed all officers in the province’s districts to register FIRs and conduct medical examinations of all newborn bodies to combat this heinous crime. The letter emphasized that anonymous culprits often dispose of these bodies in garbage sites or unattended areas.

The IG Sindh office also took action to prevent the unauthorized handover of unclaimed newborn bodies to welfare organizations without proper inquest proceedings and FIR registration. The officers were instructed to ensure that inquest proceedings, medical examinations by medico-legal officers (MLOs), and FIR registration are carried out to identify the culprits.

Furthermore, it was mandated that when an unclaimed newborn body is handed over to welfare organizations for burial and safekeeping, all necessary legal formalities must be completed. Police officers were ordered to inform the relevant police stations promptly after receiving information about an unclaimed newborn body, before its collection from the location. This measure aims to enable the local police to collect and secure evidence from the scene and handle the case in accordance with the law.
