Mixed Revision for Fuel Prices

The federal government has announced fresh petroleum product prices for August 12, reducing the price of petrol while increasing the rate of high-speed diesel (HSD) .

According to a notification from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), petrol has been reduced by Rs1.70 per litre, bringing its new price to Rs325.92 per litre. Meanwhile, the price of high-speed diesel has surged by Rs1.39 per litre, taking the new rate to Rs382.25 per litre .

Daily Pricing Mechanism in Action

The revision comes under Pakistan’s new daily petroleum pricing mechanism, which was introduced amid volatility in global oil markets. The government kept prices unchanged for August 11 due to the non-publication of Platts benchmark prices on August 10, which are a key component of the pricing formula . The latest change reflects international market movements that were not captured in the previous day’s freeze.

Impact on Consumers

The petrol price reduction offers modest relief to motorists, rickshaw drivers, and small vehicle owners. However, the diesel hike is expected to add to transportation and logistics costs, as HSD is the primary fuel for heavy transport, agriculture, and industrial sectors . This could contribute to inflationary pressures on essential goods across the country.
