President Claps Back at Tehran’s Conditions
US President Donald Trump has demanded that Iran pay compensation for what he described as decades of attacks, directly countering Tehran’s earlier demand for war reparations from Washington .
On August 10, Trump posted on Truth Social that Iran’s compensation request gave him an “interesting idea.” He stated he is “likewise demanding compensation from Iran, for all of the people that they have killed and gravely wounded with their roadside bombs and many conflicts, for which they are famous” . He also called for compensation for families of those killed in the 2000 USS Cole bombing in Yemen, an attack the FBI has attributed to Al Qaeda, not Iran .
The US president told reporters he has instructed his representatives to include these demands in all future negotiations and noted that the Strait is currently “open” and controlled by the US Navy .
Iran Sets Conditions for Reopening the Strait
The US demand comes in response to conditions set by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council for reopening the Strait of Hormuz . Tehran insists the US must permanently end military threats, lift the naval blockade and sanctions, release frozen Iranian assets, and pay compensation for damages caused by the conflict .
Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly stated it is very close to an agreement with Oman on defining a new temporary shipping route through the strait . However, Iranian officials have made clear that the waterway will not be fully reopened until Washington meets its conditions, including compensation .
Diplomatic and Economic Fallout
The exchange of compensation claims appears to have further dimmed prospects for a deal, with oil prices jumping 3-5% on Monday . Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated the conflict is “not a stalemate” but “an economic war of attrition” .
