The case concerning the marriage of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi has taken a new turn with revelations from Muhammad Latif, a housekeeper employed by Bushra Bibi’s ex-husband, Khawar Farid Maneka. During the proceedings in the court of Civil Judge Qudratullah, Latif disclosed that Imran Khan frequented Bushra Bibi’s residence, insinuating an illicit relationship between the two.
Latif claimed that Maneka instructed him to monitor the pair, but both Khan and Bibi reportedly rebuked him and demanded he leave the room. The witness reiterated allegations of an inappropriate relationship between the former PTI chairman and Bushra Bibi.
The court has postponed further deliberation on the case’s legitimacy until the next hearing on December 8.
Adding to the controversy, Maneka accused Khan of disrupting his family life by pursuing a relationship with Bushra Bibi under the guise of spiritual guidance (Piri-Muridi). He alleged that Khan and Bibi’s marriage occurred during her iddat, a mandatory waiting period in Islam after a marriage ends, either due to the husband’s death or divorce.
Countering these accusations, Imran Khan, in his first public statement since his imprisonment, vehemently denied any wrongdoing. Swearing on the Holy Quran, he asserted that he only saw Bushra Bibi’s face on their nikkah day, dismissing the allegations as morally reprehensible and unprecedented.
The case’s complexity deepened with the testimonies of Mufti Saeed, who officiated the marriage and witnessed Aun Chaudhry. Both stated that the marriage did not comply with Shariah law and was, therefore, unlawful. Chaudhry also revealed that Khan divorced his previous wife, Reham Khan, in 2015 through an email at Bushra Bibi’s behest. Chaudhry described Khan’s troubled state over his marital issues during that period, often seeking “spiritual solace” with Bushra Bibi.
