Poll: Majority of Republicans Confident in 2024 Election Vote Count

A new poll shows a dramatic shift in Republican attitudes toward the integrity of U.S. elections, with a majority of GOP voters now expressing confidence in the accuracy of the 2024 presidential vote count. This marks a stark turnaround from the widespread skepticism that characterized the aftermath of the 2020 election, when then-President Donald Trump relentlessly questioned the legitimacy of the election results and falsely claimed that the 2020 presidential race had been “stolen” from him. The poll’s findings highlight a significant change in the public mood, especially among Republicans, after Trump’s victory in the 2024 election.

Rising Confidence in the 2024 Election Vote Count

According to the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll, about 6 in 10 Republicans reported having “a great deal” or “quite a bit” of confidence that votes were counted correctly in the 2024 election. This marks a striking increase from just 2 in 10 Republicans who expressed confidence in the vote count in a similar poll conducted in October 2020. The new survey also reveals that approximately two-thirds of Republicans are confident that their state’s vote count was accurate, a significant rise from 4 in 10 before the 2024 election.

These positive shifts in Republican attitudes have contributed to an overall increase in national confidence in the election process. The percentage of Americans saying they have “a great deal” or “quite a bit” of confidence in the accuracy of the 2024 election count now stands at about 60%, up from around 50% in October. This indicates a recovery in public trust in the electoral system following years of controversy, including Trump’s repeated attacks on the validity of the 2020 results.

From January 6 to a Change in Republican Sentiment

The change in Republican confidence is particularly notable given the events of January 6, 2021. Following Trump’s false claims of a stolen 2020 election, his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s victory. At the time, nearly two-thirds of Republicans believed Biden’s election was illegitimate, and many continued to harbor doubts about the 2020 election’s fairness. Trump’s rhetoric throughout his presidency sowed deep mistrust in U.S. elections, influencing many Republicans to question the legitimacy of voting processes at every level.

However, since Trump’s victory in November 2024, there has been a marked decline in skepticism among Republicans regarding election security. Despite Trump’s continued rhetoric around election fraud, particularly in the lead-up to the 2024 election, voters seem to have more faith in the electoral process as it stood after Trump’s win.

Increased Trust in Local Election Officials

The newfound confidence extends to local election officials as well. The poll found that 7 in 10 Americans now have a great deal or quite a bit of confidence in the ability of local election officials to accurately count votes in the upcoming 2024 election. This is a significant increase from the 6 in 10 who expressed such confidence in October. Notably, this change is almost entirely driven by Republicans, with 7 in 10 GOP voters now expressing high confidence in local officials, compared to just about half of Republicans in October.

This shift is particularly significant given the climate of hostility and threats that local election officials faced after the 2020 election. Many experienced harassment and even death threats, resulting in a wave of experienced administrators leaving office. The increased Republican confidence in local election officials could signal that the contentious political climate is beginning to subside, and trust in election management at the local level is on the rise.

Democratic Confidence Declines Slightly

While Republican confidence in the electoral process has surged, the poll reveals a slight decline in Democratic confidence. Approximately 6 in 10 Democrats now express confidence in the accuracy of the national vote count, down from about 7 in 10 before the 2024 election. However, their confidence in the accuracy of state vote counts remains stable, and the dip in national confidence is nowhere near as drastic as the skepticism Republicans exhibited after Trump’s defeat in 2020.

For Democrats, the transition of power following the 2020 election was peaceful, with Vice President Kamala Harris conceding her loss to Trump the day after the election. There was no coordinated effort among Democrats to challenge the outcome or prevent Trump from taking office, unlike the efforts made by some Republicans in 2020 to block Biden’s ascension to the presidency.

The Road Ahead: Trust in Election Integrity

The findings of this new poll highlight the complex and evolving state of public trust in U.S. elections. While the Republican Party has significantly increased its confidence in the election system following Trump’s victory in 2024, the shadows of 2020’s election challenges still linger. With increasing public faith in local election officials and state-level vote counts, it seems that the scars of the 2020 election may be healing, at least among Republican voters.

However, it is clear that the road ahead is still fraught with political and ideological divides. For now, the overall increase in confidence in the integrity of the 2024 election marks a significant departure from the atmosphere of skepticism that prevailed during Trump’s tenure, offering a hopeful sign for the future of U.S. elections.
