ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has designated senior lawyer Niazullah Niazi as the new chief election commissioner.
Barrister Gohar Khan resigned from the role of PTI’s chief election commissioner after being nominated as the party’s chairman by Imran Khan.
Following Khan’s resignation, PTI officially appointed Niazullah Niazi to fill the vacant position.
PTI has scheduled intra-party elections for this week in compliance with the directives from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
PTI’s core committee is holding the intra-party elections after consulting with their incarcerated party chairman, Imran Khan.
In a related development, Barrister Ali Zafar announced that Imran Khan would not participate in the intra-party polls, nominating Barrister Gohar Khan for the party chief position.
The slated date for PTI’s intra-party elections is Saturday.
PTI Senator Ali Zafar, alongside Raoof Hasan and Barrister Gohar, addressed the media in Islamabad, making the announcement.
Zafar clarified outside the Election Commission of Pakistan in Islamabad that Khan’s temporary absence from the chairmanship is due to his disqualification, resulting from the Toshakhana case. He affirmed that Khan would reassume the party chairman role once the disqualification is overturned.
Furthermore, Imran Khan’s lawyer, Sher Afzal Marwat, informed journalists that the ousted prime minister would abstain from contesting the intra-party elections due to his conviction in the Toshakhana case.
